eleven Releases eleven Archiving

Solution provides companies with long-term, audit-compliant, and encrypted storage of their original business email communication, while meeting legal guidelines.

eleven, an email security provider, recently announced the availability of eleven Archiving, an email archiving solution. The company states that the solution, which works in accordance with audit requirements, is compliant with the GDPdU (German Principles of Data Access and Auditing of Digital Documents), is a proprietary development, and offers practically unlimited scalability, making it ideal for companies of any size. It provides companies with long-term, audit-compliant, and encrypted storage of their original business email communication, while meeting all legal guidelines. Integration with the email security solution eXpurgate Managed Service ensures that only business-relevant messages are archived. eleven Archiving allows for archiving of both incoming and outbound email. The solution is available as an externally managed service, thereby freeing up company infrastructure.

According to it, eleven Archiving is designed for highest data volumes, unlimited scalability and maximum storage times. Archived data is always saved multiple times and in different locations. Archiving email on separate data centers ensures that a potential failure at one location can be offset, but even the partial failure of an individual system has no effect on the archived emails or access to them. eleven Archiving is designed to guarantee that there is no limit as to how long the email can be stored.

The company mentions that choosing a managed service saves companies from using their own hardware or system resources for archiving, while simultaneously eliminating any maintenance, upkeep, or administration - thereby making a contribution to company IT cost-efficiency. eleven Archiving is completely independent from the email system used, entirely maintenance-free, and requires no changes to the company's email infrastructure.

It explains that a special web interface gives users and administrators quick, easy access to saved messages using search functions and full text indexing. Users can search by sender or recipient, date, and keyword, as well as combinations of these criteria. Further security is provided by the 'four-eyes principle', whereby emails from co-workers cannot be opened without authorization by at least two administrators. the company exclusively uses data processing infrastructures within Germany for archiving, thereby giving companies the security that strict German data protection legislation is observed and that company data won't cross the country's borders.

Hexagrid Announces Service Provider Adoption Program

Company provides service providers tools needed to rapidly deploy and start offering IaaS cloud computing services to their customers.

Hexagrid Computing, a developer of IaaS cloud computing solutions, today announced its new Service Provider Adoption Program. The company avers that the Hexagrid Service Provider Adoption Program leverages its VxDatacenter SPE to provide service providers all the tools needed to rapidly deploy and start offering IaaS cloud computing services to their customers in as little as four hours.

It explains that the current problem with the cloud management market is the perceived notion that only large organizations can afford to setup and start offering IaaS cloud computing services to their end users. Unfortunately, this myth has been perpetuated by many of the large incumbent software providers. They stand to lose their current dominance when IaaS cloud computing delivers its promise of turning computing resources into a true commodity. Its Service Provider Adoption Program breaks this misconception by showing how easy and inexpensive it is to deliver unlimited computing resources. To ensure that adoption of IaaS cloud computing is as painless as possible for service providers, the company delivers cloud computing resources at your fingertips. Service providers can start realizing the power they have when they put all their efforts on improving the applications end users actually interact with.

The company further explains that with its VxDatacenter platform, enterprises can implement a secure private cloud and service providers can rapidly deploy and monetize multi-tenant branded IaaS cloud computing services. VxDatacenter's holistic approach to IaaS cloud computing enables not only the provisioning of virtual machines, but end-to-end computing resource management of all the essential computing components. All this delivered in a fashion that helps facilitate innovation within organizations. VxDatacenter features true multi-tenant/multi-tiered organizational anywhere access, comprehensive audit logs and usage reporting, complex network topology, self-provisioning, and most importantly can be deployed and scaled in minimal time.

"While the IaaS cloud computing market has certainly seen a lot of hype over the past year, we have found that many service providers remain confused by all the cloud washing of the many vendors claiming to offer more than they can deliver," said Suresh Mandava, CEO and Founder of Hexagrid Computing. "Our Service Provider Adoption Program is designed to combat this confusion and offers service providers an easy low cost way to start IaaS cloud computing services with minimal adoption risk. Most importantly, the program is designed to help facilitate the adoption of IaaS cloud computing for end users looking to leverage the many benefits of the larger IaaS public clouds. Now they can leverage the expertise of the service providers they already know and trust."

Amazon Web Services Reduces Storage Pricing

Makes cloud storage a more enticing alternative to buying hard storage; lowers the cost for those already storing data on the cloud.

Amazon Web Services, a cloud computing company, yesterday announced that it has reduced the prices for its cloud storage service Amazon S3 (aws.amazon.com/s3), making not only cloud storage a more enticing alternative to buying hard storage, but also lowering the cost for those already storing data on the cloud. The company says that the cost of storage will be up to 19 percent less than before, effective November 1, 2010. There's a new pricing tier at the 1 TB level, and the current 50 to 100 TB tier has been removed, effectively extending the volume discounts to more Amazon S3 customers.

According to it, Amazon S3 provides virtually limitless scalability, 'eleven nines' (99.999999999 percent) of durability, and the choice of four distinct geographic locations for data storage. The new prices apply to standard storage in the US Standard, EU - Ireland, and APAC - Singapore regions. The discounts are skewed towards making smaller storage allotments cheaper, starting with the first 1 TB now being $0.14 per GB, down from $0.15 before. The most significant drop in price is at the 50 to 400 TB level, which went from $0.14 to $0.11 per GB. The company adds that its Reduced Redundancy storage (that provides 99.99 percent durability rather than eleven nines) will continue to be two-thirds the price of standard storage in all regions.

It claims that price reductions have been significant for the company's customers, and organizations that have built solutions that use the company to support their products. It has been lowering the price of its computing, which some say coincides with the inevitable downward shift in the price of computing. In September, for instance, the company launched 'Micro Instances,' offering a low price option for running lower throughput applications and websites that consume significant compute cycles only periodically. Earlier this year, it reduced the price for its content delivery network service, CloudFront, by 25 percent across the board, meaning that 10,000 requests now cost only $0.0075.

iomart Group plc, a managed hosting and data center company, today announced the acquisition of the entire issued share capital of Titan Internet Limited (Titan), a hosting provider, for a total cash consideration of up to GBP 4.2 million. The company says that the acquisition is in line with its strategy of becoming the UK's foremost hosting company, focused on the delivery of high end managed hosting environments and solutions.

Trustwave Supports PCI DSS and PA DSS Version 2.0

New version will help further secure payment data.

Trustwave, a provider of on-demand and subscription-based information security and payment card industry compliance management solutions, recently announced its support of the updated Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA DSS), both Version 2.0, released by the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC), October 28, 2010.

The company explains that the new version includes existing requirement clarifications, provides additional guidance and reveals minor changes to evolving requirements. The changes to the standards include better alignment between the PA DSS and PCI DSS. In addition, changes to the Self-assessment Questionnaire will better align with the changes to the PCI DSS, and bulleted lists will be broken out into sub-requirements.

It further explains that after reviewing the updates to both standards, the company believes the following changes are most important to address:

PCI DSS Version 2.0

* Scoping the Cardholder Data Environment (CDE): The PCI SSC clarified the responsibility of the assessed organization's accuracy of their PCI DSS scope by identifying all locations and flows of cardholder data and ensuring they are included in the PCI DSS Scope.
* Additional Sources for Secure Coding for Non-Web Based Applications: The PCI SSC clarified that additional sources like SANS CWE Top 25 and CERT Secure Coding, in addition to OWASP, can be used for best practices guidance for vulnerability management.

PA DSS Version 2.0

* Facilitate Centralized Logging: Pertaining to requirement 4.4, the new version will mandate that payment applications facilitate a merchant's ability to assimilate logs into their centralized log server.
* Cryptographic Clarification: Pertaining to requirement 2.7, cryptographic key material stored by previous versions will now be rendered irretrievable.
* Merger of Requirements 10 and 11: This will help further align the PCI DSS and PA DSS.

The company states that the changes to both standards take effect January 1, 2011. The sunset date for the existing standards is December 31, 2011. Any organization submitting a Report on Compliance or Report of Validation after December 31, 2011 will have to comply with the Version 2.0 standards. More information about the PCI DSS and PA DSS is available at http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org.

"After a thorough review of both the PCI DSS and PA DSS, we noted there were no significant changes that would adversely affect our compliant customers or customers in process to become compliant," said Robert J. McCullen, Chairman and CEO of Trustwave. "We stand behind the decisions made by the Council and believe this new version will help further secure payment data."

"Based on our investigations, these changes align with the problems encountered by our customers," said Nicholas J. Percoco, Senior Vice President and Head of SpiderLabs, Trustwave's Advanced Security Team. "Centralizing logging will help organizations more efficiently investigate an anomaly that may be an indication of a cardholder data breach or an attempt."

"We are pleased to see the changes focused on alignment of PCI and PA DSS as well as the elimination of redundant requirements," said James Paul, Senior Vice President of Delivery at Trustwave. "The changes will help clarify the relationships and demarcation between PCI and PA DSS assessments."

Afilias Partners with .JO Registry

Partnership helps bring native language email to Arabic internet users.

Afilias, a provider of internet infrastructure services and the Registry operator for .INFO, today announced that it has partnered with the National Information Technology Center of Jordan, to produce the first public demonstration of an email message between two completely internationalized (or IDN) email addresses in the Arabic language, using its new IDN email technology and a fully IDN domain name and IDN TLD from the .JO Registry.

It says that at the APTLD meeting in Amman, Jordan, the company and the .JO Registry demonstrated sending and receiving email using the fully internationalized email addresses الاردن.الدولي-البريد@تجربة and الاردن.الدولي-البريد@مبيعات. Email was sent from and to these addresses using both a web-based email client and a mobile application.

The company mentions that the Jordanian Registry officially launched the Arabic version of its ccTLD as .alordon which translates to xn--mgbayh7gpa using the Punycode algorithm and is visible in Arabic as الاردن. Registration in the new IDN version of the ccTLD was launched on October 11, 2010, beginning with a sunrise period for Governmental Entities and Diplomatic Missions, and shall be followed by a registration period for trademark holders.

It explains that internet users are familiar with using domains that are written in ASCII (Latin/English characters) - on websites, in email, and in many other internet applications. Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) were first launched in 2004 based on an IETF standard called IDNA (RFC 5890), which uses the Punycode encoding algorithm to represent non-ASCII characters found in Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Hindi and other languages, into ASCII names that the DNS system can resolve. This allows internet users to type a domain name in their local script using their native language, instead of an English translation.

The company articulates that since 2004, businesses and individual users have been able to register second level IDN domains in many scripts across many top-level domain (TLD) extensions. However, both the user name portion of an email address and the TLD itself has been ASCII-only. Recently ICANN approved the introduction of IDNs at the top level, so TLDs like .JO can now be visible in a native script like Arabic as .الاردن.

According to it, the company's IDN Email is a software package that supports 'Email Address Internationalization' (EAI), a standard under development by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). This standard removes the restriction of English-only alphabets in email addresses. The IDN Email application allows people to use almost any language in their email address. The company's implementation follows RFC 4952 and additional draft RFCs that are in the process of being standardized. These changes allow both the username and the domain name of an email address to be in any language/script represented in the Unicode standard. More information about its IDN Email solution and how to become a beta partner can be found at www.afilias.info/idnemail.

"The adoption of IDN domain names has been inhibited by the lack of technical support within email programs for internationalized addresses which would still be compatible with the global DNS system. With Afilias' unique and standards-compliant IDN Email solution, we are able to finally address this problem and facilitate IDN adoption in any language."

"The final link in the conversion of the web to a truly global audience is to give all users of the internet their website and email identity in a form that truly represents them, in their own language," added Dr. Nabeel Al-Fayoumi, Government CIO / Director General of the National IT Center / .JO and .الاردن Registry. "We are pleased to cooperate with Afilias on an historic and important move forward in technology that will empower Arabic and other non-English speaking internet users around the world to communicate in their own language."
