Network Solutions Offers Suite of Services for New gTLDs

Company offers private label domain registration services for companies, organizations and communities planning to register, manage and sell new gTLDs.

Network Solutions, a provider of web-based technology for small business, website creation, web hosting and domain name registration, today announced that it is offering a complete suite of services to help applicants for new top level domain names operate, manage, promote and distribute their new domain names.

The company explains that in March 2011, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the organization that develops policies which govern the operation and use of domain names, is expected to formally launch the new generic top-level domain program (gTLD) that will allow applicants to own and manage their own gTLD on the Internet beyond the most commonly known .COM, .NET or .ORG. Brand managers, product managers, program directors, city managers and others will be able to secure domain names, such as .YOURBRAND, .YOURPRODUCT, .YOURCAUSE OR .YOURCITY, and own a unique namespace on the Internet to further promote their brands, products, programs, and special interests. Those interested in securing a new gTLD will have to complete and submit a detailed business and technical application to ICANN for review and approval.

It further explains that the company offers numerous products and services to help new gTLD applicants succeed in this changing internet landscape. These offerings span the breadth of applicant needs and include products to generate revenue streams, multiple domain distribution options, and back-end Registry services. Value added services range from technical application assistance, to products such as offering e-mail services customized for your new TLD, setting up a web presence for your employees or fans, to online marketing services that can help drive traffic to your sites. As ICANN approaches a final announcement of this program, new TLD applicants should consider engaging with industry experts to understand not only the opportunities but also the requirements outlined in the application process.

"The new gTLD opportunity offers a unique and innovative branding opportunity for corporations, organizations and municipalities," said Kurt Gastrock, Senior Vice President of Product Strategy and Development at Network Solutions. "The Network Solutions' expert team and proven platform offers a simple, reliable and integrated solution to help those entities meet and exceed their marketing and business needs."

Amazon Web Services Introduces Amazon SES

Unviels beta release of Amazon Simple Email Service, a bulk and transactional email-sending service for businesses and developers.

Amazon Web Services LLC (AWS), an affiliate of Amazon.com, Inc., today announced the beta release of Amazon Simple Email Service (Amazon SES), a scalable and cost-effective bulk and transactional email-sending service for businesses and developers. According to the company, Amazon SES eliminates the complexity and expense of building an in-house email solution or licensing, installing, and operating a third-party email service. The service integrates with other services offered by it, making it easy to send emails from applications being hosted on services such as Amazon EC2. With Amazon SES there is no long-term commitment, minimum spend or negotiation required - businesses can utilize a free usage tier, and after that, enjoy low fees for the number of emails sent plus data transfer.

It articulates that building large-scale email solutions to send marketing and transactional messages is often a complex and costly challenge for businesses. To increase the percentage of emails that are successfully delivered, businesses must deal with hassles such as email server management, network configuration, and meeting rigorous Internet Service Provider (ISP) standards for email content. Additionally, many third-party email solutions require contract and price negotiations, as well as significant up-front costs.

The company explains that Amazon SES eliminates these challenges and enables businesses to benefit from the years of experience and sophisticated email infrastructure it has built to serve its own large-scale customer base. Through a simple API call, businesses can now access a high-quality, scalable email infrastructure to efficiently and inexpensively communicate to their customers. For high email deliverability, Amazon SES uses content filtering technologies to scan a business's outgoing email messages to help ensure that the content meets ISP standards. The email message is then either queued for sending or routed back to the sender for corrective action. To help businesses further improve the quality of email communications with their customers, Amazon SES provides a built-in feedback loop, which includes notifications of bounce backs, failed and successful delivery attempts, and spam complaints.

We also plan to provide a new set of tools for smaller companies worldwide through a software-as-a-service model."

"As Microsoft's 2010 ISV/Software Solutions Innovation Partner of the Year, 1E is clearly a valued strategic partner and a proven expert in the IT efficiency space," said David Hayes, Director of the Microsoft Partner Solutions Center. Rackspace Launches Cloud Infrastructure in Europe

UK pay-as-you-go cloud provides IT scalability & 24x7 support.

Rackspace, a web hosting company, today announced the launch of its cloud infrastructure to provide customers with a European based infrastructure for their cloud-based data footprint. The company says that the new UK cloud offerings include Cloud Files, running on OpenStack Object Storage, and Cloud Servers, based on the Xen hypervisor. The new cloud platform joins the dedicated hosting platform already offered in EMEA.

The company explains that its Cloud Files provides instantly scalable cloud-based storage, which is ideal for electronically storing items like backups, video files, or static user content. It opened its source code for Cloud Files to the public through the OpenStack project, an open source cloud computing project founded by the company in July 2010. The OpenStack project was initiated to drive open cloud standards, so customers would not be locked into proprietary cloud software.

It further explains that its Cloud Servers provide instant computing power, allowing customers to serve applications with flexibility and efficiency. Customers are able to deploy one or even dozens of cloud servers instantly, for as long or as little as they are required. Available in Windows and a variety of Linux distributions, Cloud Servers gives users full root access and control over their servers through either the Rackspace Cloud control panel, the Application Programming Interface (API), third party tools or the company's newly acquired Cloudkick subsidiary. The company has already fully integrated the Cloudkick panel into the UK cloud offering so users can manage both US and UK cloud servers from one panel.

"Our US-based Rackspace cloud has already been hugely successful, with over 100,000 customers globally now taking advantage of our hosted cloud services," said Lanham Napier, President and CEO, Rackspace. "Due to storage regulations set out under European law, many UK companies are restricted from using cloud. Our UK offering allows companies to avoid offshore data issues and weighty upfront capital investments which helps them become more strategically agile from a business perspective. We're delighted to launch our UK cloud today and we already have over 500 customers in beta."

"Some industry analysts have stated that by 2012, 20% of organizations will no longer own an in- house IT infrastructure," continued Napier. "Cloud computing enables this evolution in a cost- effective way; if customers on the cloud no longer need resources, they stop using them and almost immediately stop paying for them. This will be critical to companies still fighting to cut costs from their budgets, and will allow them to control spending more tightly than ever before. It is as a result of direct feedback from our existing and prospective customer base in Europe that we have brought the Rackspace cloud to Europe and built it out in our UK data center. The Rackspace European cloud brings with it reduced latency for those customers and helps eradicate concerns over currency fluctuations and European data legislation compliance."

"Running our own servers proved inefficient and costly. With Rackspace, our resources are freed up from managing hardware and we are now better equipped to cater to spikes in demand online," said Ivan Retzignac, Founder at MedicAnimal.com. "We are also saving in excess of GBP 100,000 a year, which can be invested in better services and solutions for our customers."

Webroot Announces Latest Release of Email Security Service

Provides channel partners with enhanced email security management to meet growing demand.

Webroot, a provider of security solutions for the consumer, enterprise and SMB markets, yesterday announced the latest release of its Email Security Service. The company avers that as managed service providers, systems integrators and other resellers often take on the role of IT administrator for their customers' security, this update provides its channel partners with a consolidated view of all end users - giving them more flexibility to quickly and easily manage user provisioning, and saving them valuable time that can be rededicated to more profitable activities.

We believe the latest release of the Webroot email security service will make it far easier to set up new accounts, and to more efficiently and effectively manage end users, which should translate to time savings for us and our customers."

The services provided by these servers such as HTTP, HTTPS, SSH and ping are monitored. The current service status is visualized in green if the service is available and red should the service be unavailable. Additionally, customers can retrace the history of the past 7 days to get a broad overview. All mentioned features can be freely activated or deactivated.

The company further explains that another handy feature is the automatic notification should a server status change. Thus, the customer does not need to manually check their server status but will instead be notified as soon as there are any changes. Depending on the smartphone and configuration used, the notification appears either as a text message or a combination of text, sound and vibration.

It avers that the 1&1 Mobile Server Monitoring App is available for all common mobile operating systems. It is free of charge and ready for download at Apple iTunes and Android Market. Shortly, it will also be made available from the Nokia Ovi Store. An online video demonstrating the app can be found at the company's YouTube channel at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PoTaIF7Amo. SiteGround Offers Free SSL

Company will provide hosting package including a free SSL Certificate.

SiteGround, a web hosting provider, today announced the launch of a special promotion: hosting package including a free SSL Certificate. The company avers that it aims to increase the number of users who protect sensitive data transfer over the web with the help of an SSL encryption.

It articulates that it launched a special promotion where the SSL Certificate plus a dedicated IP address come free of charge for the first year. Security has always been the company's top priority and that is why it now gives away free SSL Certificates, so that webmasters hosted on its servers will be able to provide safer data transfer over the web for their website users. The company has also included a dedicated IP address in the promotional hosting package, which is a big plus when it comes to search engine optimization and also ensures better connectivity for the website.

According to the company, its shared hosting package costs less than $50/year and contains all standard hosting features. A free domain name registration is also included. The company promotes its hosting services as suitable for small business and company websites. During the time of the promotion, a free SSL Certificate plus a dedicated IP address worth $82.00 will be added to the package at no additional cost.

"The SSL Certificate is a must in online payment transactions. But it secures data transfer on many other levels as well. Web users are getting quite paranoid about the privacy of their personal information - every login form they fill in, every newsletter they sign up for, every piece of data they enter anywhere on the web - they want to know that the personal details they submit will not be stolen and misused. And we provide to our customers a cost-free solution to this issue - a free SSL Certificate which allows them to provide to their website users the assurance that any personal information they submit on their websites remains private. The SSL padlock in the browser makes a website much more trustworthy in the eyes of the users," said Nikolay Todorov, CTO, SiteGround.

NephoScale Announces New IaaS Platform

With on-demand access to cloud servers, dedicated servers, cloud storage and an advanced API, users can set up a cloud infrastructure in minutes.

NephoScale, a cloud hosting provider, yesterday announced its flagship Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) offering that include cloud servers, on-demand dedicated servers and object-based cloud storage - all powered by a programmatic interface that gives users unprecedented control over their cloud infrastructure.

The company mentions that its cloud services platform is built on a unique architecture that is capable of scaling horizontally, vertically, and geographically, and that simplifies the creation of complex computing environments. A core company innovation is a programmatic interface called CloudScript that allows users to provision and manage all aspects of their cloud infrastructure using a single API submission.

It explains that its cloud servers and cloud storage are available on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no long-term commitment, which enables companies to reap the benefits of increased scale, improved service levels, and more reliability with little or no capital expenditure. The company's initial service offerings include -

* NephoScale Cloud Servers: A resilient, on-demand cloud compute service that is accessed through an easy-to-use GUI or programmatically with its API. Users can choose from several different Linux and Windows operating systems using pre-packaged server images (including 64-bit) and they can provision a server in minutes. Data stored on NephoScale Cloud Servers is persistent.
* NephoScale On-Demand Dedicated Servers: Servers that take advantage of the on-demand provisioning and control of the cloud, yet still benefit from the security and performance offered by the most technologically current physical hardware.
* NephoScale Object-based Cloud Storage: A scalable and redundant cloud storage solution that replicates objects three times, translating to uptimes in excess of 99.999%. The company's cloud storage can scale to hundreds of petabytes.

The company says that its cloud infrastructure services are now available worldwide. NephoScale Cloud Servers and Cloud Storage are billed on a pay-as-you-go basis, while On-Demand Dedicated Servers are billed on a month-to-month basis. A low-priced annual membership plan is available for Cloud Servers that discounts the hourly rate by 50 percent. Dedicated Servers are available on an annual pre-pay basis that includes two months free.

"We're taking a new approach to IaaS by making it so simple for developers to autonomously set up a cloud infrastructure, that it removes the system administrator from the equation, which means companies can do even more with less," said Bruce Templeton, President of NephoScale. "The technology we've built into our architecture also helps us fulfill a real industry demand by supporting PaaS functions, such as configuring and optimizing an application stack, while providing the additional services and flexibility associated with an IaaS."

"CloudScript is putting a level of infrastructure control into developers' hands that they haven't seen before," said Templeton. "Imagine you're a developer deploying 10 web servers with storage, firewalls and load balancers. Instead of doing individual API requests for each one, you can now do one API submission and call it done. You can begin to see how this can seriously impact efficiency and delivery times."

NetApp to Acquire Akorri Networks

Together, the company and Akorri will provide customers with comprehensive tools to automate and analyze their shared IT infrastructures.

NetApp, a storage and data management solutions provider, yesterday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Akorri Networks, Inc., a provider of data center management software, in an all-cash transaction. The company states that Akorri is a provider of data center management software focused on performance capacity analytics for virtualized, shared IT infrastructures. Akorri enables customers to identify performance bottlenecks and improve storage capacity planning to free up the time, people, and budget resources that are needed to run virtual environments. Akorri has gained significant market momentum, growing its customer base by more than 100% in 2010. Customers rely on Akorri to reduce the risks and costs of deploying virtualization with an integrated management approach across the entire IT stack, including applications, servers, networks, and storage.

It further states that together with Akorri, it will provide customers with comprehensive tools to automate and analyze their shared IT infrastructures, efficiently deliver on service levels, and respond to rapidly changing business needs. Akorri extends NetApp OnCommand with performance capacity analytics to provide customers greater visibility across the entire IT stack. As a result, customers can further improve IT efficiency and flexibility through functions that help control, automate, and analyze their shared IT infrastructure. The company provides Akorri immediate enterprise credibility with the industry's storage platform of choice for building an efficient and flexible shared IT infrastructure as the foundation for cloud computing and the ability to reach enterprise customers and service providers to accelerate adoption and success of its products around the world.

The Apache Software Foundation Announces Apache Cassandra 0.7

Highly-scalable open source distributed database for handling large amounts of data is a Key component in cloud computing.

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) yesterday announced Apache Cassandra v0.7, the highly-scalable, second generation Open Source distributed database. It says that Apache Cassandra is successfully deployed at organizations with active data sets and large server clusters, including Cisco, Cloudkick, Digg, Facebook, Rackspace, and Twitter. The largest Cassandra cluster to date contains over 400 machines.

The organization lists the following among the new features in Apache Cassandra v0.7:

* Secondary Indexes, an expressive, efficient way to query data through node-local storage on the client side
* Large Row Support, up to two billion columns per row
* Online Schema Changes - automated online schema changes from the client API allow adding and modifying object definitions without requiring a cluster restart

It mentions that Apache Cassandra is available under the Apache Software License v2.0, and is overseen by a Project Management Committee (PMC), which guides its day-to-day operations, including community development and product releases.

"Apache Cassandra is a key component in cloud computing and other applications that deal with massive amounts of data and high query volumes," said Jonathan Ellis, Vice President of Apache Cassandra. "It is particularly successful in powering large web sites with sharp growth rates."

"Running any large website is a constant race between scaling your user base and scaling your infrastructure to support it," said David King, Lead Developer at Reddit. "Our traffic more than tripled this year, and the transparent scalability afforded to us by Apache Cassandra is in large part what allowed us to do it on our limited resources. Cassandra v0.7 represents the real-life operations lessons learned from installations like ours and provides further features like column expiration that allow us to scale even more of our infrastructure."

GigaSpaces Partners with CloudTran

CloudTran integrates its transaction management middleware with GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform.

GigaSpaces Technologies, a provider of application platforms for Java and .Net environments, yesterday announced that CloudTran, a cloud management provider, has integrated its transaction management middleware with GigaSpaces eXtreme Application Platform. It adds that the move comes on the heel of its partnership with Citrix to provide an open and elastic cloud-enabled platform to meet organizations' application development, deployment and scalability needs. The company claims that the partnership will allow the companies to offer a Java-based solution that runs large database infrastructures in public, private, and hybrid cloud environments.

It explains that scalable applications require new approaches to transactional management and application architecture. GigaSpaces XAP and CloudTran provide solutions to these issues so application developers can build rapid, large-scale applications in less time and with lower risk. GigaSpaces XAP is an end-to-end virtualized application platform featuring an in-memory data grid that can manage terabytes of data. XAP and CloudTran enable highly responsive transaction processing over the largest distributed and cloud computing environments, significantly improving the performance, availability, reliability and cost-efficiency of large scale transaction processing.

The company says that its infrastructure ensures high-speed processing with millisecond latency, while providing automatic failover. The combined XAP-CloudTran infrastructure gives IT organizations the tools and infrastructure components needed to build and deploy database-focused enterprise applications in the cloud by providing a simple Java view of data, transactions and automatic distribution within public clouds, private clouds, and hybrid combinations.

It further explains that GigaSpaces scales at the in-memory data level, while CloudTran provides scalability at the persistent data level by logically organizing data stored across multiple computing nodes. By using XAP as the infrastructure, CloudTran can process thousands of transactions each second, making it suitable for a broad range of online transaction processing solutions. CloudTran provides a data modeling tool and a transaction manager that implements ACID transactions, and integrates the GigaSpaces in-memory grid and persistent data stores. Additionally, CloudTran provides hot failover recovery, which rebuilds data within the GigaSpaces' grid if a node fails.

"We were seeking a platform that would allow us to offer extreme scalability, reliability, and high-speed processing," said Tom Henn, President and CEO of CloudTran. "GigaSpaces XAP provides the back-end that allows our clients to build highly reliable database management systems while maintaining complete data integrity."

CA Technologies Adds New Features to CA Access Control

Expanded functionality helps organizations bolster security of privileged user access and streamline compliance reporting.

CA Technologies, a provider of IT management software and solutions, today announced the addition of new features and functionality to CA Access Control that help customers address critical needs of Privileged Identity Management by centrally controlling, monitoring, and auditing privileged users and providing temporary privileged access across servers, applications and devices - all from a single management console.

The company articulates that most IT organizations have privileged user accounts for their IT administrators, which give them extensive access to IT systems. However, the inability to properly control and audit privileged access can create a serious security threat - as the number of widely reported insider breaches over the past 18 months has shown. It claims that it continues to leverage more than 30 years of experience controlling privileged users on distributed systems like UNIX/Linux and Windows - and now further extends that expertise into the Privileged Identity Management market.

The company avers that new features within CA Access Control include:

* Privileged User Password Management for Application-to-Application and Application-to-Database automated operations: This functionality helps improve security, reduce the cost of managing system account passwords, and address guidance in the Payment Card Industry regulation (PCI-DSS) by automatically managing system account passwords. Whether for Windows services, Windows scheduled tasks, or application-to-database activity, CA Access Control and its Privileged User Password Management (PUPM) functionality automates password and account management.
* Privileged User Session Recording and Playback: From the moment a privileged user checks out a password for any PUPM managed device, his or her actions can be securely recorded and then made available for video playback. This functionality is delivered through an OEM agreement with ObserveIT Ltd., a global leader of session-recording software. To further assist in compliance reporting and help deliver more secure, streamlined operations, the company has added UNIX keyboard logging and integrated that information directly with the log management system.
* PUPM Automatic Login and Advanced Integratio: CA Access Control with PUPM capability automates end-user login to any CA PUPM-managed device helping to prevent password theft. The advanced, fine-grained integration of traditional CA Access Control capabilities with CA PUPM functionality provides the ability to track and log a privileged user's activity based on his or her 'original' user ID and help control what the privileged user is able to do once in the system.

"The 2010 Data Breach Investigations Report conducted by the Verizon RISK team and United States Secret Service suggests that the misuse of privileged administrator credentials is the single largest cause of insider data breaches," said Nimrod Vax, Senior Director, CA Technologies, Security. "We have been helping our customers control administrator activity for many years. This new release extends the capabilities CA Access Control offers to help further secure the use of privileged accounts within applications, and address the growing security and compliance needs for privileged user monitoring."
